Marking our Anchor Chain with Rainbow Markers by Osculati

Back in lockdown 2020 we took advantage of an empty marina to upgrade our anchor chain and install some nifty little anchor markers. Nearly two years later we’re pleased to say that they’re holding up very well, in fact, we’ve just fitted some more!

If you ever find yourself wondering how much chain you’ve let out, then these could be your answer. They are plastic coloured (Red, Yellow, Green, Blue and White) chain rainbow markers from Osculati and are available for 6mm to 12mm chains. They slot into the links on your chain and do not interfere with the running of it over the gypsy.

We initially installed at every 10 metres with an additional marker at 1 metre so we know when the anchor is about to break the sea surface when recovering. However we found that more often than not we were needing to know ‘midway’ depths, i.e 25 metres, hence the reason we’ve just installed some more. We now have the 1 metre marking and every 5 metres up to 50 metres.

We found that six markers of each colour was adequate to notice it when it’s running. For example our 1m marking has six red markers.

We’ve not been paid to promote these, we’ve simply found them to be a neat and effective way of marking our anchor chain so we want to share our review as a way of helping others. They are firmly wedged in and we’ve not lost any to date. They are available from various chandlery’s and online, think we got ours on Ebay for less than £20 for an assorted pack!
