Sailing Plymouth to Fowey

It was time to continue our West Country sail and head into Cornish waters. With a predicted Easterly wind moving to the North, averaging 14 knots and a pleasant 18˚C and sunshine we set off.

We had anchored in Batten Bay, just off of Mountbatten Bay, after previously spending a few nights in Cawsand Bay. Departing at 1.00pm we unfurled the head sail and motored out of the bay. The sea state was pretty uncomfortable with a considerable swell coming through making the journey rather rolly. The wind was not strong enough to keep the sail filled and we didn’t want to raise the main with the boat rolling from left to right. We continued like this for 2 hours 😟

We were in position at 50˚18.218N 4˚18.913W when the wind picked up to roughly 12 knots from the south-east and we could raise the main sail. Finally the boat became more stable and we were able to turn the motor off and sail.

But alas it was not to last! Just one hour later we lost the wind and as we had been attempting to sail we were further out from the coast than we had initially planned. The wind had been predicted to swing to the north as the day progressed when in fact it was coming from the south – go figure!?

A rolly hour of motoring and we arrived at Lantic Bay, our intended anchorage for the night. As the prediction was for northerly winds we thought this would have been perfect but nature had other plans. With a rolly sea state and the wind now coming from the south (why????!!!) this anchorage was untenable. We popped in just to have a nose but there was no way we could have stayed in those rolls; such a shame as it looked stunning!

Lantic Bay Anchorage

Our only option now was to continue on to Fowey, just a couple more miles along the coast. Our disappointment at not being able to anchor in Lantic Bay was replaced with anticipation and excitement as we were greeted with one of the prettiest harbours we’ve entered. We were going to enjoy exploring this place!

VIDEO: A Rolly Old Sail 😂

It’s very hard to capture swell on video but trust us – it was there!
