Upgrading our anchor to a Mantus M1 45lb/20.4kg Anchor!

Whilst our current 15kg Delta anchor has not let us down so far, we wanted more options for anchoring moving ahead. Our current anchor has been great in sand but in soft mud or anything grassy it would often struggle to bite. With plans of being ‘on the hook’ much more we wanted to ensure our ground tackle was going to be meaty enough for all holdings!

After many hours of research online we settled for the Mantus M1 anchor. It claims to ‘dig like no other’ and has been praised by many on social media and various forums. Being a 10.5m boat we checked out the handy sizing guide on the Mantus website to determine what would be suitable for our size boat. Their 35lb/15kg anchor was showing as the recommended size for a 10.6m to 12m vessel in conditions under 30 knots, classed as a day anchor. For wind speeds up to 50 knots (cruising anchor) it was showing the same anchor as being suitable for a vessel size between 9m and 10.6m, and for speeds over 50 knots (storm anchor) it was suggesting a vessel size of 7.5m to 9m. Mantus say these “recommendations are made assuming the worst-case scenario, a poor holding bottom and thus may seem conservative but we believe are accurate” so we felt happy with these figures and made the decision to go with their 35lb/15kg anchor.

Of course, ideally, no one wants to be anchoring in 50 knot winds, so we were looking more at the cruising anchor specifications. Another consideration that we had was wanting to ensure that it fitted in our bow roller, and that our existing anchor pin could still be used. A few years ago a neighbouring yacht was departing when they misjudged the conditions and got blown onto our bow. Our anchor got caught on their stanchion but luckily we had our anchor pin in place. We escaped with just a bent anchor pin. Our existing 15kg anchor fitted nicely in our bow roller, however even the 35lb/15kg Mantus anchor looked bigger than our existing 15kg anchor so the question was “would it fit?”. Again Mantus came to our aid with printable ‘mock up’ templates so out came the printer, cardboard and scissors and we got to work.

But then we thought “hang on, lets print the bigger 45lb/20.4kg one too” So we did!

With the two templates made up we found ourselves suddenly drawn to the bigger of the two. We don’t think you’d ever really say “I wish we’d got a smaller anchor” so we had a look at what the 20kg would offer us:
Day anchor for recommended winds up to 30 knots – 12m to 13m, up to 13,600kg
Cruising anchor for recommended winds up to 50 knots – 10.6m to 12m, up to 9090kg
Storm anchor for recommended winds over 50 knots – 9m to 10.6m, up to 6800kg

We weigh around 7 ton so this was starting to look very appealing, the question now was “would this bigger one fit?” After all now would be the ideal time to upgrade to an ‘oversized anchor’ if it allowed.

Up to the bow we headed with our “here’s one I made earlier” anchor and to our surprise the 45lb/20.4kg slotted in nicely!

The mock up showed that the bigger of the two would comfortably sit in the bow roller whilst the nose is still clear of hitting our bow.

Our minds were made up. If we were going to upgrade our anchor then we may as well get as big as we can get, whilst being mindful to the load it would have on our windlass and the aesthetic appearance…we didn’t want it looking too overkill! The larger one would also provide us with more holding power in stronger winds and, although no one likes to get caught out in storm conditions, knowing that we could get caught out is always a concern so this was another box ticker for us.

We ordered ours from The Wet Works as they had the cheapest price with free UK delivery. And it was delivered within 2 days so very impressed!

Assembling the new anchor was very straight forward, it really is a case of bolting together and applying lubricant liberally. But again Mantus provide a helpful and detailed construction guide on their website to assist. We will admit though that at this point doubts did cross our minds as to whether or not it would fit. As you can see the new Mantus M1 45lb/20.4kg is considerably bigger than our existing anchor…!

We also compared it to the ‘mock up’ we created. You will notice that the length of the shank is actually bigger on the real anchor. This caused us a slight issue as the end of the shank was coming very, very close (and we mean potentially hitting) to the drum on our head sail when deploying and/or retrieving the anchor.

As a result we purchased a rubber keel roller from Western Towing and secured this further back within our bow roller to stop the shank rising up when the anchor is deployed and retrieved. We also added a strip of 2mm neoprene adhesive backed rubber sheet, purchased on Amazon, just at the edge of the bow roller where it goes into the anchor locker. This is to avoid any dissimilar metal corrosion because the longer shank ever so slightly touches the base when secured with the anchor pin.

Finally we attached the anchor to our existing 70m of chain with a Crosby Lifting Shackle – 0.75 t from Arthur Beale

Now all we need to do is put it to the test! We’ll let you know how we get on 😊

6 Months On…

What a beast this anchor is! Suffice to say we are extremely happy with this upgrade 👍 The first time we anchored with it in Totland Bay it took straight away, albeit in a sandy bottom! However we didn’t experience any other problems with it taking, apart from the one time in St Mawes when we didn’t actually dump enough chain and it took a little longer to dig into the seaweed bottom. However, despite this, it still eventually took, even with minimum chain and in poor holding – our fault not the anchor’s!

The only issue we did experience initially was due to the shackle. The first few times we weighed anchor we found it coming up sideways/backwards and despite ‘attacking’ it with a boat hook we found it troublesome to get it righted in order to get it over the bow roller. Therefore we invested in a Mantus S2 Chain Swivel 5/16”-3/8” from ‘The Wetworks’ whilst on our travels. Not cheap at £110 but it made all the difference, so money well spent I guess! Now if the anchor does come up sideways or backwards it simply rotates as it slots back up onto the bow roller.

We also invested in a Telescopic Mini Boat Hook from Marine Scene (though a considerably cheaper investment at just £15.99!) which we have mounted to the inside of our anchor locker. This stows away neatly but can easily be deployed to help assist getting the anchor under the rubber keel roller (occasionally the anchor needs a push and we would rather damage the hook than lose a finger or two!) or to push off seaweed, netting or anything else that often comes up attached to the anchor!

And if you’re wondering how we got on with the Ocean Blade Bow Fender that we have fitted here in the above picture…well we were very, very disappointed with it. So much so we sent it back! We initially purchased one just after we installed the new Mantus anchor, after all you don’t want that thing hitting your bow! The first one we received was covered in brown stains which didn’t come off so we returned it and were sent a new one…all good. However after just 2 months discolouration appeared in the new fender and once again these marks couldn’t be removed – it looked as though it was years old, not a few months. It was also difficult to secure to the bow, despite our best efforts it always ended up to one side when sailing and 9 times out of 10 was impossible to get back into place in preparation for arrival into a marina. We expect a bow fender to move about at sea but expect to be able to quickly get it back into place! We previously had a Majoni bow fender and didn’t have half as many issues with that! We only upgraded to the Ocean Blade as it was longer, and whilst it looked great on, in reality it was a big let down. At the end of our travels we contacted Marine Scene who we had bought it through and expressed our disappointment. They immediately sent a courier to collect the item from us and refunded us the £90 we had outlaid – all credit to these guys, they really are great on customer service⭐️

Perhaps we could have worked out a way to secure the fender better or have a quick release/attach method but we couldn’t have lived with the ugly brown stains. And perhaps this was just a bad batch and we were unlucky, who knows? Anyhow it’s probably back to the Majoni for us!

In the meantime we can highly recommend the Mantus anchor, it’s certainly given us that extra piece of mind when anchoring ⚓︎
